Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay's birth occurred on August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of the arts by her aunt Denise at the age of a small girl. Her aunt worked in the evening shifts as a nursing assistant, so she could follow her passion of theater and literature in the daytime. The aunt introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay became enthralled by the film. DuVernay discovered through her example the power of art as an instrument for social activism. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was socially conscious and taught the importance of speaking up through the art of. DuVernay, who grew up together with her parents in Compton and spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historical civil rights marches over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay visited Selma during the summer and was in awe of the idea to film on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she received degrees in English and African American Studies. DuVernay discovered a passion for journalistic broadcasting while in school. Her first job was as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was tasked to monitor and investigate the residence for a specific Jury member. Her tasks to accomplish left her unsatisfied which is why, when she decided not to pursue a career in journalism, she shifted to the field of public relations. DuVernay started her first job as a publicity specialist in an unassuming production studio straight after she graduated from school. In 1999, she launched her own firm of public relations called The DuVernay Agency. In addition, she launched several lifestyle and promotion networks such as Urban Beauty Collective.
